Hello there! Thank you for your interest in working with me. If you are curious about exploring and resolving trauma, I hope the following will be helpful:
Trauma
Trauma is what happens in the body, mind and nervous system in the aftermath of any event that is experienced as overwhelming. It can be something universally recognised as life-threatening, or it can be a situation that your system couldn’t fully process at the time – whether because of age, lack of resources or support. This unprocessed trauma can remain hidden, affecting how we feel, think, and behave in ways that don’t seem to make sense.
And you may not know what happened, or whether anything happened at all, which is very common when the trauma occurred at a very early age or even in utero. Yet you may have physical, mental or emotional symptoms that don’t make sense or be unable to relax and be yourself or function in the world in the way that you want.
Trauma and the shadow
When our systems are faced with events or circumstances that are overwhelming, it’s a natural survival mechanism to lock away our reactions and aspects of the event itself. This is the origin of what’s often called ‘the shadow’ - those parts of us that we repress, deny, or suppress. These are often feelings, memories or behaviours that we find uncomfortable or judge to be unwelcome, unwanted or find difficult to accept.
The shadow can include our natural reactions to overwhelming events, which our systems have hidden away for self-protection. This is a wise strategy in the moment, but those things can remain stuck beyond our consciousness for years, and they often leak out when we least expect it. Suddenly we find ourselves acting ‘out of character’, unable to control behaviours and responses that ordinarily we would not want to be identified with.
In addition, our nervous systems operate as if the original event is still happening because the body never received the message that the danger is over. We can find ourselves on high alert, stressed or anxious for no obvious reason; or shut down, dissociated and depressed, with no ability to return ourselves to equilibrium.
Something about me
I have been helping people get unstuck since 1996. I have had the privilege of working with a huge variety of clients, from students to CEOs of publicly-quoted companies. I welcome anyone with a commitment to development and healing. I combine Somatic Experiencing with deep process psychotherapy, parts work, archetypal psychology and neurofeedback for deep, embodied transformation and healing.
How I can help
I can help you access the places within your psyche that you may not have been able to access by yourself, working 1:1 or in a group setting. I’ve accompanied many people to places that we’d all have preferred not to visit but for the fact that our freedom/integrity/sanity/self-expression/relationships/health/survival required it. When you do this, you discover the gold in these experiences and reconnect with resources you didn’t even realise you had.
Somatic Experiencing and Shadow Work - the perfect partnership
The combination of Shadow Work and Somatic Experiencing provides the opportunity for deep emotional processing and offers a safe way to access these trapped experiences that have been stored away, allowing the body to release its hold on them. This process creates a shift not just mentally but physically, as the body learns that the danger is no longer present. The brain and nervous system naturally recalibrate in response to this embodied new reality, creating a new baseline of resilience and aliveness.
If what you’ve read resonates with you, I invite you to get in touch for a free consultation during which we can explore your needs and how this work might help you on your healing journey. I’d love to support you in finding the freedom and peace you deserve.
