How Shiatsu has helped me this Winter...

One of the things I love about Shiatsu is that having treatments helps me stay in tune with my body, which helps me take the best care of myself on a day-to-day basis, in response to what my body needs at the present time.

By having regular treatments, I am always deepening in listening to my body, getting to know my body as a precious being that for many years I ignored but with whom I am now in a loving relationship.

One example of this is that in December, I received a Shiatsu treatment and the practitioner could see that my body wanted to move more. So, the focus of the treatment was gentle moving and stretching.

I had told the practitioner that my period had unusually jumped from a 28 to 26 day cycle in the last two months and that also I had been seeing clots in my menstruation which normally means my menstruation is more painful. For this reason, the practitioner gave attention to the meridian (energy channel) in my body which governs the uterus and is also responsible for storing Ki (energy/Chi) and moving it around the body.

Not only did it feel very nourishing and reviving to receive this treatment, the wisdom my body had shared meant that I then knew how to take better care of my body.

In the Winter, we often just want to cosy up in the warmth of indoor life and shelter from the dark, cold light that is outside; however it is also important to move the body. This makes the winter much easier for us to move through, mentally, emotionally and physically.

I am definitely someone who loves to have a restful, cosy winter, so I just implemented some more daily movement into my life that I could do at home. Rather than the long country walks that I love to do in the spring and summer, I found a yoga teacher that I love and bought some of her pre-recorded classes and I started doing some dance to music that I love, which turned into a very enjoyable exploration of more music that I love to move to...a perfect winter hobby :)

A month later, my menstruation was back to a 28 days cycle and was much less painful and I did not have any clots. I feel really happy about this and just in awe of the wisdom our body can share with us if we listen and invest time and resources into taking care of ourselves.

There are so many things that we can pointlessly spend money on but investing into taking care of ourselves is so beneficial. We are worth it! When we take care of ourselves, we take care of everyone else in our lives too and we take care of our ability to do what we love in the world because we are much more able to contribute when we feel supported in our lives.
